Cosmetic surgery on breasts and eyelids is most common
Breast augmentation, eyelid surgery and liposuction were the most frequently performed cosmetic surgeries in Germany in 2011. This was the result of a survey by the German Society of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons (DGPRÄC) among its members.
Plastic surgery includes more than just cosmetic surgery The DGPRÄC counted a total of 138,500 plastic surgery operations among 885 plastic surgeons working in Germany - this corresponds to about a third of all plastic surgery procedures. In addition, there are almost 132,000 wrinkle injections with botulinum toxin, hyaluronic acid and other preparations. Of the total volume of plastic surgery, the share of so-called cosmetic surgery increased only slightly, at 30 percent. The President of DGPRÄC, Prof. Peter M. Vogt, emphasizes: “This shows very clearly that plastic surgery includes more than 'cosmetic surgery' and that aesthetic surgery as one of the four pillars of the subject is only part of the broad spectrum. “The other three pillars are reconstructive (reconstructive) plastic surgery, hand surgery, and burn surgery.
Men are rarely corrected Basically, it can be seen that significantly more women than men lie under the knife. According to the DGPRÄC, men only outnumbered hair transplants, ear and chin corrections. However, this should not hide the fact that the proportion of men who opt for plastic surgery has increased. According to the Society for Aesthetic Surgery in Germany (GÄCD), the number has more than doubled. The under-18-year-olds, who only make up a share of 1.3 percent, represent a vanishingly small phenomenon. Prof. Vogt explained: "By far the most surgeries are ear corrections - there are hardly any other procedures." About the male The expert analyzed the proportion: "The statistics clearly show the problem areas of the man - hair loss, protruding ears, a little distinctive chin."
Massive wrinkle injections It was also found that the "classic" surgical interventions are almost as much opposed to wrinkle injections, but the significance of such figures is estimated to be rather low. Vogt added: "On the one hand, the high number is due to the fact that botulinum toxin and hyaluronic acid have to be injected regularly" and "In addition, many other groups of doctors also offer injections, so that the total number is definitely significantly larger. Even naturopaths and beauticians are already injecting wrinkles today, although beauticians are not authorized to do so. ”When it comes to wrinkle injections, only about every tenth person is a man. In Britain, according to a recent survey by the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS), 69 percent of plastic surgeons have had to correct the complications of external wrinkle injections. Unqualified users in particular are responsible for this. In principle, the total proportion of women in Germany who opt for such treatments is relatively low. The market research company GfK had commissioned the “Apotheken Umschau” to find out that so far only a little more than one percent of German women have been treated with Botox to smooth their wrinkles.
Differences in intimate surgery As already suspected, the survey on the subject of intimate surgery showed that penis correction with around 150 procedures is a marginal issue. The DGPRÄC had long ago critically questioned the alleged “trend” for penis enlargement. It is quite different with female intimate surgery. Of the total of 138,500 cosmetic surgeries that the respondents performed, more than 5,400 were labial corrections. This is an indication that such interventions have "arrived in the middle of society". Vogt points out, however: “We will have to discuss how to deal with the topic. The interventions are necessary in many cases, for example in the case of greatly enlarged, painful labia. But of course the strong media attention also ensures that many women no longer feel their labia as "beautiful". (Sb)
