The dark and dreary winter time does not only affect our minds. Lack of sunlight can also lead to more colds. Soaking up the sun every day can get the immune system going. That's why you should soak up the sun's rays as often as possible, especially in winter. The sun is a simple but very effective means of improving the body's immune system, ”says Prof. Ingo Froböse from the German Sport University in Cologne.

Vitamin D, actually a hormone, is an important factor in strengthening the immune system. This occurs in several steps by absorbing the sun's rays through receptors on our skin. Too little sunlight can lead to vitamin D deficiency. According to British studies, this hormone also helps lower blood pressure. "Most people have a clear deficit of vitamin D at the end of winter and spring because they just haven't got the minimum dose of daylight every day," explains Froböse.

According to the German Nutrition Society (DGE), around 60 percent of the population lives according to international criteria with a vitamin D deficiency. But only 15 minutes to 20 minutes of sunlight on the face and arms are enough in winter to prevent this. Froböse also advises that you should rather move your sports and exercise units to lunch time this time of year. Even when the sky is overcast or when there is light rain, there is still enough sunshine and you should take a short walk. In addition, the sun encourages a good mood. "The sun's rays release serotonin, the so-called happiness hormone," says Froböse.

But vitamin D is capable of even more. A study conducted by scientists from the University of California, the medical school at the University of San Diego and the medical school at Creighton University in Omaha has shown that vitamin D is also an effective tool in preventing degenerative diseases, such as diabetes Type 1, multiple sclerosis and has also been shown to work in some cancers.
